Exam Tip

Note that these formulas are given to you in the formula booklet, so there is no need to memorize them.

Trigonometry

  • Trigonometry is used to find angles of right angles triangles when given their lengths.
  • Trigonometry is used to find lengths of right angles triangles when given their angle and length.
  • Only present in right angle triangles.

Exam Tip

You will be often asked to calculate lengths inside of 3D shapes. That is often only possible by using trigonometry, so be sure you know these concepts.

Cosine rule

  • It is needed if you are given two sides and the angle between them, or all three sides but no angle. In these cases, you cannot use the sine rule.
  • You are given this formula in the formula booklet.

Sine rule

  • Useful when you are given 2 angles and a length, and have to find the other length in a triangle.
  • Works with any type of triangle; useful when you cannot use trigonometry.
  • You are given this formula in the formula booklet.

Area of a triangle (advanced)

  • You already know you can use (base x height x 0.5) to find the area of a triangle if you know the base and perpendicular height. But when that isn't the case, what do you do?
  • Apply this formula that you calculate it!
  • Note that you are given this formula in the formula booklet
